I guess it is to be expected that students will misbehave a little more than usual due to Spring Break coming up. As we learned today in class, the misbehavior will usually come from a small group of students but the challenge is to make sure that other students do not play along.Sam Swartzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17918125257777402821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-69215887812317084142012-02-27T17:48:19.381-05:002012-02-27T17:48:19.381-05:00That's awesome that you have been able to stay...That's awesome that you have been able to stay after 2nd period. And don'...I think that's a great goal Alex! And don't worry, you aren't the only one struggling with that. I think all of us have an idea in our head of how we want to run our classrooms and how we will convey knowledge, but there are always road blocks that seem to get in the way. I think part of figuring out our identity as teachers is how we deal with these road blocks. Don't let them get you down! :)Sarah S-Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03051276622392634167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-66855281751697210482012-02-05T01:28:55.311-05:002012-02-05T01:28:55.311-05:00As a starting point and way to brainstorm ideas on...As a starting point and way to brainstorm ideas on how to incorporate humor, getting to know your students will be invaluable. Each class will have its own 'class clown' with their own style and the different personalities within each class will create VERY different dynamics from one period to the next. Observing what the class already finds entertaining can give you clues on how to go about incorporating your own humor. Plus, then you know who to call on for a laugh when you need a different style in the room! Finding out how you can incorporate humor IS part of finding out who you are in the classroom. I don't think you can separate them. However, if the humorous part of your personality emerges as a natural part of you building rapport with your students, you'll discover a style of humor that works for them and you.ashanda210http://www.blogger.com/profile/06222087148614669139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-6426073648668313662012-02-04T14:49:02.696-05:002012-02-04T14:49:02.696-05:00I think it's really important to be comfortabl...I think it's really important to be comfortable in the classroom so that your students understand that you are human and have a sense of humor! The more you can relate your humor with the humor of your students then I think that the lines of communication will be opened up even more because they feel as though you can understand them in certain ways. Of course we can't completely let loose and be ourselves in the classroom but we should definitely take time to have a little bit of fun everyday.Alliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17900676234693093668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-54771614341581131012012-01-05T15:41:01.325-05:002012-01-05T15:41:01.325-05:00New Follower via Thursday Cafe Blog Hop

I can also agree that I've been learning about myself and how to be a better educator. I've learned about the brain previously but never in this way, and its been interesting. I hadn't thought about how important it was to truly understand the students in this way so that you can better prepare them. Teachers need to make it Priority #1 to establish a good relationship with students, or as you say, they will sometimes crumble under the pressure that all students are under. In all levels of education, students are increasingly being pushed to meet higher and higher expectations in all facets of life, curricular and extracurricular. If a student can't comfortably know that an open line of communication is there between student and teacher, it puts the student in an awkward position and such position creates more stress.
I totally get you here, great post!- Andrewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17055466772452133274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-4585623116000342882011-09-25T18:13:12.874-04:002011-09-25T18:13:12.874-04:00Alex, I completely know what you mean! ALL of my teachers had their bags that they would carry into class every day and now I have the over the shoulder bag.

I often contemplate what my class will look like, what I'll put on the walls, what I will and won't set on my desk and other silly things like that. It is definitely empowering when the teacher walks out of the classroom to know that for those few minutes that is your classroom. It makes me so so so so excited to know that one day I will have my own classroom with students and textbooks and coffee and an over the shoulder bag to come to every day!Juliahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06249113322321309953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-69784106112231810502011-10-02T23:39:14.064-04:002011-10-02T23:39:14.064-04:00I completely agree with you that if a teacher does...I completely agree with you that if a teacher does not fully figure out a lesson or activity for the students when a sub is in then it is pretty much a waste period for the students. I remember when I was in school and my teachers would say "We will be having a sub tomorrow" my friends and I would all be happy, because that either meant a movie or a waste period that we could all just hang out. But my question for us teachers in training is how can we figure out activities for our students that will review the content with the students that a sub will be able to do?Johnathan Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02205154462063864182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-44968709450240841812011-10-09T14:20:40.342-04:002011-10-09T14:20:40.342-04:00It's so great that you are able to engage the ...It's so great that you are able to engage the students who seem uninterested. Even being able to pinpoint the students who are not as involved in the classroom is a great accomplishment! A lot of teachers are so busy and focused on their classroom as a whole that they do not recognize individuals. Having the ability to engage all of the students can really make a difference in the overall classroom environment. Regarding getting more involved in the classroom, you could ask your cooperating teacher if he/she would allow you to do simple things like take attendance or grade homework. This could be a way for you to get to know the students more and the different levels they are at. Also, you will feel more comfortable when teaching your formal lessons! Be persistent with your cooperating teacher until he/she lets you do something!Sarah S-Phttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03051276622392634167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-55741818792951753192011-10-17T00:03:49.770-04:002011-10-17T00:03:49.770-04:00You have no comments and it's after midnight o...You have no comments and it's after midnight on Sunday. Here I am to fill the gap! I will resist the urge to finish your quote; although I would like to say that the last word of the line is "custard." I digress... I really am writing to respond to the content of your blog.

First, I'm excited that you'll be able to teach a formal lesson soon, since being 'active' in the classroom makes field feel worthwhile. While the days of a semester can run together, no two days of field are the same and for me, involvement in classes always highlighted that in a BIG way. Keep finding ways to involve yourself. You might still be thinking that you need an invitation to do something in class. However, the day will come when you jump in and love it so much that you will wonder why you ever bothered to wait! (I didn't believe in the existence of such a day a year ago, but it comes, I promise.)

Second, I'm not at all surprised that your most meaningful experience this week occurred outside of the classroom-you were able to connect yourself to the larger community. If field is about being active in the classroom, for me, the educational experience is about connecting: events, people, and experiences. Those connections seem to last longer than any specific lesson content. The little moments outside of the classroom as you hold your chai tea or as you color in a poster to hang in front of a soldier's home, those will be the moments your students remember long after they've forgotten the arguments for and against unions. Enjoy the little moments and hold onto them as tightly as you can. Regardless of what happens in the classroom itself, those moments will remind you of why you want to be a teacher and why you can't ever stop learning and growing even on the most difficult days.ashanda210http://www.blogger.com/profile/06222087148614669139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-24788768538357768212011-11-06T18:05:41.062-05:002011-11-06T18:05:41.062-05:00I had a classmate tell me this week that she didn’...I had a classmate tell me this week that she didn’t want to be a teacher because she didn’t want to babysit or be subject to all the current political pressure. I can’t say I’m looking forward to those aspects of teaching myself. However, I couldn’t effectively articulate why the more difficult aspects of the teaching profession were far outweighed by its benefits. Teaching has to be a spiritual profession in order for its rewards to be explained. Long and frequently thankless hours and difficult meetings with parents, not to mention difficult class periods with students don’t exactly make teaching seem appealing. Yet, as you mention, nothing tangible or empirical can really explain the power of a student’s light bulb moment or the realization that true change has occurred. In the absence of such explanations, we are left with faith and spirituality. Admittedly it doesn’t offer much of an explanation either, but at least it names the unexplainable. As educators, we can’t be aware of which of our actions will create the greatest impact in our students’ lives. Similarly, our students won’t necessarily be aware of the learning that needs to be done until it has already occurred. Despite our best efforts, there are aspects of the learning process that can’t be described. The impact of participating in that process as a teacher presents an even greater linguistic puzzle. No words adequately describe what I feel or pinpoint what I am doing when I set foot in a classroom. Consequently, I turn to spirituality to offer the explanation and the validation for the profession I’ve chosen.ashanda210http://www.blogger.com/profile/06222087148614669139noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-22321122084323881662011-11-06T22:26:40.263-05:002011-11-06T22:26:40.263-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Johnathan Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02205154462063864182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-41989179731231739262011-11-13T22:39:19.354-05:002011-11-13T22:39:19.354-05:00It's really great to sometimes take a step bac...It's really great to sometimes take a step back and realize why you're doing what you're doing. I have always liked working with people and I've always thought about teaching, but when taking these classes at the college I have made sure to ask myself if this is what I really want. If you really want it you're going to be more successful. Having experiences in field where you can see the joy and gratitude of the students makes it all that much more worth it. In both teaching through these experiences and through outside experiences teaching kids to swim and coaching disabled swim teams I've realized that this is something I really enjoy. I hope you feel better and keep looking for these experiences because they are sooo encouraging.Caitlyn Murphyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12090279252909459581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8732239905002548038.post-91535787246579240152011-11-19T14:31:30.213-05:002011-11-19T14:31:30.213-05:00I think it's so cool that you are already wish...I think it's so cool that you are already wishing you were in a classroom teaching and implementing the things we have learned throughout this semester.
